SCHILLER: BEATSMEDIA PORTFOLIO

“My name is Christopher von Deylen – and I am Schiller. At some point during every Schiller concert, von Deylen speaks these ten words and the crowd goes wild. He didn’t choose the name Schiller by accident. Prior to the release of his first single, Christopher von Deylen had just read “Die Glocke” (“The Bell”) by Friedrich Schiller. His inspiration led him to release his albums under the poet’s name. The name “Schiller” has since become synonymous with emotionally charged electronic music.

Christopher Von Deylen grew up in the countryside of Northern Germany. He studied cultural science before deciding to pursue a career in music. His debut single Glockenspiel was released in 1998 and was the start of his success story. His debut album, Zeitgeist, resonates as typical Schiller, spherical sounds synchronized to poetic lyrics that are spoken by established recording artists. His first major breakthrough came with the release of his second album Voyage in 2001.The single Dream of You, featuring vocalist Peter Heppner, quickly rose to the top of the charts. The following year he received the prestigious “Echo Award” for The Best Dance-Single of the Year.

He credits electronic pioneers like Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Kraftwerk as his musical inspirations. Von Deylen is known for creating visionary sounds that are way ahead of their time. As described by musician/composer Mike Oldfield, “[He creates] music that moves one really deep inside.”

Schiller’s music has been enriched by diverse collaborations, from pianist Lang Lang, to vocalists Nadia Ali, Colbie Caillat, Anggun, and many more. He has collaborated with other well-known Djs such as Damae of Fragma and Klaus Schulze. Von Deylen’s ability to break genres has garnered his own classification, “Shill-Out”.

As a self-confessed work-a-holic, he brings his universe alive in his at home recording studio. Schiller’s gathered experiences are transformed into music. In 2008, he traveled in his old Volvo from Berlin to Calcutta. The trip resulted in the album Desire. His most recent journey to Iceland aboard the research vessel Polarstern was the driving force behind the album Breathless.

“Much like a scientist who is always curious, sometimes he doesn’t know what he’s looking for until he finds it. That’s parallel to what I’m doing,” says von Deylen, “I’m looking for sounds, melodies, but most of the time I have no clue what will come out at the end of the day. It’s staying open to the element of surprise. That is a defining part of my life.”

With 6 chart topping releases, over a million albums sold, and spectacular live shows, Schiller has a true understanding of aesthetics. He has become an artist who has the unique ability to transcend genres, transitioning between trance, world music, ambient, new age, and electronic. His fans and press have coined the phrase “global pop” to best describe his ethereal melodies. Schiller’s personal experiences and interests have resulted in an exceptional collection of work with unparalleled diversity
