Janet Devlin’s Exclusive Interview With Inclusive Networks

inclusive networks 2Singer-songwriter Janet Devlin recently spoke with Inclusive Networks, in which she discussed her debut album Running With Scissors, her role models, and plans for her future. You can read segments from the interview below, but make sure you visit InclusiveNetworks.co.uk to read the full interview.

For anyone who hasn’t heard the album yet, how would you describe it? Is there a track that means more to you?
The album itself doesn’t have a specific genre per say because I built the sounds around what the song itself was trying to say. The common thread within the album is the fact that lyrically it all come from my journals. I tend to write my diary entries in poem form so that I have lyrics already written in their skeletal form. The fan reaction was so much more positive than I could have ever anticipated! They seemed to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. The song that means the most to me would have to be ‘Whiskey Lullabies’. It’s such a personal song and I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to write it, but I’m glad I did because it’s my favourite and also a fan favourite too.

Who were your musical role models when you were growing up?

The Red Hot Chili Peppers – I grew up listening to their music as a child and it just seemed to carry into my teenage years also. I love funky guitar rhythms and bass lines but I also love rock so this band just suited me down to the ground. Anthony’s not hard on the eye either which always helps.

City and Colour – I discovered Dallas when I was around 14. I adored his poetic lyrical style and his amazing tone. He inspired me to write honest lyrics that also tell a story of my life.

Paramore – I went to see Paramore when I was eleven. It was my first ever gig and I’ll never forget it. Not only are their songs great and heartfelt, I also really loved the fact that they have a female front women. As a child growing up I really wanted to be in a rock band so that gave me hope to become a female in the music industry.

Fans are all waiting to hear what Janet has in store for them for the future. Here is what Janet has to say about the future and her upcoming music:

We hear you’re about to hit the studio to record new music. Can you let us in on what we expect from your new album, or even EP?
I’m currently in the studio right now working on a Christmas EP which is funny because it’s April. Although I’m in writing mode at the minute for my next album, which is really exciting because I’m working with some super talented people which makes me work even harder. I’ve no idea who the final team will be for the next album as I haven’t actually finished writing it so I’m unsure as to what the sound is just yet. There will be some live dates around Autumn time – I’m putting plans together for US, UK and Ireland gigs.

Singer-songwriter Jon Allen performed in Amsterdam as a part of the Songbird Sessions. The annual Songbird Sessions is a weekend full of performances from talented singer-songwriters including Jon Allen, Rae Morris, Andreas Moe, and Roo Panes. A Bit of Pop Music was at the event on April 22nd and gave a great review of the entire night.

Jon Allen was the second performer of the night. Here is what A Bit of Pop Music had to say about Jon’s performance:

British folk rock singer-songwriter, Jon Allen just released a new album called Deep River from which he played quite a few tunes, for example the beautiful ‘Day and Night’ and ‘Lady of the Water’. With ‘In Your Light’ and ‘Happy Now’ from his first record he managed to get the crowd singing along. Allen played guitar throughout his whole performance and for some songs he was joined by a pianist, who added some swing to a rendition ‘Dead Man’s Suit’. He charmed the audience with a simple but effective performance.

You can catch Jon Allen on tour this month in the Netherlands, Ireland, and United Kingdom. Be sure to visit his website for more information about tour and where to purchase tickets. Click HERE to read the full album review from A Bit of Pop Music.

FAIRCHILD Named ‘Artist of the Week’ by Indie Rock Cafe

FAIRCHILD has been named ‘Artist of the Week‘ by Indie Rock Cafe for the week of April 19th. Indie Rock Cafe’s article about the band, provides an overview of band’s growth and success thus far.  Fairchild has been growing in popularity over the past couple years beyond the shores of Australia to the shores of England and North America.

Last November, Fairchild dropped their newest self-produced EP, Sadako, overseas and in the United States. Sadako, which spawned the standout single, “Aracadia,” was also mixed by Catherine Marks in London’s Assault & Battery Studios. Other standout tracks include “Dancer” and “Figure It Out.” Sadako EP brought their popularity to new heights. Fairchild was recently in the running for mtvU’s The Freshmen for the music video for “Arcadia,” which can be seen below.

Fairchild’s funky, pop-glazed melodies and beats, harmony-laden choruses, catchy, energetic guitar riffs, sparkling keys and groovy bass lines are so wonderfully delivered that they sound like they’ve been making music together for a decade or more.

The magic between band members – Adam Lyons (vocals), Nathan Lyons (keyboards), Tim Voeten (guitar), Patrick Huerto (guitar), Tommy Davies (bass), and James Alexander (drums) – is evident in song after song of the band’s relatively small, but impressive, discography.

Engelbert Humperdinck’s Exclusive Interview With Examiner.com

eh - fb photoMusic legend Engelbert Humperdinck recently spoke with Examiner.com, in which they discussed his upcoming performance at Morristown, New Jersey’s Mayo Performing Arts Center, Friday evening, April 17th. “I’ll be singing some of my standards, songs from my new album, as well as some new songs from other artists. It will be a lively evening, very entertaining, with a touch of humor,” says Humperdinck.

Humperdinck also spoke with Examiner about his first ever duets album, Engelbert Calling. The pair spoke about what it was like to record with music legend Gene Simmons, as well having the honor of having Cliff Richard on the album as well.

HUMPERDINCK: To my surprise, the great Gene Simmons from KISS came in to record with me. He was truly an exciting person to have in the studio, believe me. You know, I’m six-one, but he’s about three inches taller than me, just a giant of a man with a great sense of humor, and just brought a great deal of pizzazz to the recording.

EXAMINER: On the album you also have Cliff Richard, who must have been a major hero of yours, growing up in England.

HUMPERDINCK: Well yeah, the funny thing is, Cliff was a major star in the ’50s at the same time when Elvis came in. Cliff has probably had more number one hit singles than anyone else in the world. I used to be an opening act for Cliff and now all of these years later, he agreed to be on a duet with me. So that was quite a thrill for me. He still looks great. He’s like the Peter Pan of the industry.

Humperdinck also spoke about the unlikely musical pairing of himself and Jimi Hendrix. “I’ll tell you why that happened; they were just introducing Jimi to Europe. So, what they did was to put him on a bill with someone like me who was already well-known in England, to give him some publicity. Not that he needed it, because he was really already becoming a star in his own right,” say Humperdinck. Jimi Hendrix also performed with Humperdinck when Humperdinck’s guitar player did not show you. “He came up to me and said, “Don’t worry, man. I’ll play for you.” I mean to have Jimi Hendrix play for me.. I just wish that someone was there to record or film it.”

Pop Matters Reviews Janet Devlin’s ‘Running With Scissors’

JD - Woods Black Coat smallPop Matters has recently reviewed Janet Devlin‘s debut album Running With Scissors, in which they gave the album a 6 out of 10. Pop Matters gave a great and thorough review of the album, which you can read fully on PopMatters.com. “Janet Devlin gleefully confronts the outer reaches of self-identity and self-determination on Running With Scissors. She does it through such a wide-eyed panoramic lens that you can almost see the layers of naïveté being peeled away as her angular but polished tones glide across her 10-song sequence of lovelorn and fun loving folk pop,” says Pop Matters.

With a title like Running with Scissors, you’d expect the album to have a youthful vibe to it, somewhat rebellious but with a playful bent. Certainly, Running with Scissors leans heaviest on childhood tropes: the reliance on the age-old fear of the dark in “Creatures of the Night”; the references to card games in “House of Cards”; “Hide & Seek” and its denotations; the twinkling sound of a music box and the hushed singing in “Whisky Lullabies.”

What Running with Scissors really shows us, though, is that Janet Devlin has grown a lot since her 2011 appearance on Series 8 of The X-Factor. As she continues to navigate the lush instrumentation of strumming guitars and dramatic strings that adorn Running with Scissors, her voice and musical ambition can only be the better for it. And that will be a wonderful treat.
