Flaming Lips New Song Is A Jock Jam For Oklahoma City Thunder?
When we think of the kind of music that’s typically used to whip highly trained athletes and the enormous crowds that gather to watch them into a wild frenzy, the Flaming Lips don’t come to mind. But when was the last time The Lips or lead singer Wayne Coyne did something expected? Their new song “Thunder Up: Racing For The Prize,” is a fight song dedicated to the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder concocted just in time for the kickoff of their playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs.
This past weekend The Flaming Lips called out to Oklahoma City Thunder fans on their Twitter feed to gather suggested lyrics for the new rally cry. The lyrics were set to a reworked version off “Race For The Prize” of the band’s 1999 album “The Soft Bulletin.” In it Coyne sings, “And when they win, we win with them … They’ll keep fighting for Oklahoma.”
The custom jock jam has already spread all over the blogosphere with mixed reviews. Music fans seem less than impressed while some other, more sports minded fans seem elated to have a fight song that’s not a rap tune for a change. While the song may not be a lasting mantra for the Thunder, it’s a bit cooler than the Spur’s fight song. Well at least if you like tripped out, psychedelic rock.
