UK Singer-Songwriter Jon Allen Signs To OK!Good Records
OK!Good Records is proud to announce the signing of British troubadour Jon Allen, and the upcoming release of his first US album, Sweet Defeat! The follow-up to the singers’ much acclaimed 2009 UK debut album Dead Man’s Suit, Sweet Defeat is an eleven track musical portrayal of a relationship gone wrong that takes the listener on an emotional ride without ever delving into sappy territory.
The Devon born, raspy voiced, singer-songwriter found success early on when his song “Going Home” was featured in a 2008 UK advertisement for Land Rover. With the song a commercial success via tens of thousands of downloads, Allen’s critical acclaim continued to grow in England with rave reviews in the music press, an appearance on Later With Jools Holland, and five singles playlisted on BBC Radio 2. Allen’s praise has not just been limited to the UK, but has spread all over Europe, where he has been touring regularly since the release of his first album. He has supported acts such as Emmylou Harris, Seal, Mark Knopfler, and KT Tunstall among others.
Produced by Tristan Longworth, Sweet Defeat is backed by the same raw emotional intensity in his voice that has become so distinctive of Jon Allen, frequently drawing favorable comparisons to a young Rod Stewart. Showing an impressive air of confidence and maturity in his songwriting, the album tells about love in all stages – from the initial attraction and passion to heartbreak and loss of hope. Americana, folk, and blues influenced, Sweet Defeat seamlessly transitions from solo acoustic, finger picked songs to upbeat and instantly memorable band anthems, creating a cohesive and distinct work of art. The title track is the talented singer’s tribute to the Muscle Shoals sound, infused with one of the most impassioned blue-eyed soul performances heard in years.
