The Music Sponge Diaries Reviews A Genuine Freakshow’s “Oftentimes”

The Music Sponge Diaries recently reviewed A Genuine Freakshow’s awesome debut album, Oftentimes. The Music Sponge Diaries gave a really solid review that you can check out below:

When I first saw the name of this group, probably like most people I didn’t quite know what to expect. But with an indie rock band comprised of seven people that consist of a violin and a trumpet player, I guess in most cases that would be fitting to be called a “freakshow”. Don’t let the name nor the lineup fool you into thinking that there’s something “freakish” about AGF’s sound; in fact, they make perfect sense together.

Oftentimes (OK! Good Records) is the debut full-length album by AGF. Their obvious influences of groups like Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros, and Radiohead mixed with poetic lyricism, makes Oftentimes a very solid piece of work.

The album starts off with “We are the Undercurrents”, a criminally short but explosive way to introduce what the band and the album’s sound is about. “Hopscotch Machine Gun Madness” is a fun up-beat song that talks about the internal and external struggles of not wasting the time of others and ourselves.

“You Cut Me Out” (my personal favorite on here) sounds like it took a page right out of the Dark Side of the Moon song book. With it’s dreamy musical landscapes mixed with falsetto vocals, this is definitely one of the more standout tracks.

So overall, Oftentimes is a very impressive piece of work. The cohesiveness of all of the instrumental elements will definitely impress you, the listener.
