Bands You Should Know: Snarky Puppy
Snarky Puppy is a enormous collective of about 30 musicians that incorporates a broad range of instrumentation into a delicious stew of musical genres. Their latest album “Ground Up” was filmed and recorded live over 3 nights in legendary bassist Matt Garrison’s new Brooklyn performance space, Shapeshifter Lab, in front of a 40-person studio audience. Similar to the setting of their last live album/DVD, “Tell Your Friends” (Ropeadope Records, 2010), the project captures the rawness and spontaneity of Snarky Puppy’s live energy, but this time in a stripped-down Brooklyn warehouse.
Snarky Puppy attempts to do what many bands dare not, and that is to make virtuosic instrumental jazz music appealing to a larger audience. Their music avoids being too cerebral and focuses on being fun, intriguing and groovy as hell. This is a band everyone should check out.
