Engelbert Humperdinck Tim Conway Jr. Show

Engelbert Humperdinck Talks Frank Sinatra, “Lesbian Seagull” and more in New Radio Interview

Engelbert Humperdinck recently appeared on the Tim Conway Jr. Show with collaborator and producer Joel Diamond to chat about his long, illustrious career and share untold stories. They talked about Engelbert’s work ethic in the studio, discovering Bruno Mars at age 5, and of course, reminisced on blocking The Beatles from a number one hit with “Release Me.”

However, there was one Engelbert Humperdinck song that never saw the light of day. No one could ever guess that the reason for this unreleased track was none other than Frank Sinatra:

“He stole a song from me – it was ‘Strangers in the Night.’ Burt Campford wrote the song for me, along with ‘Spanish Eyes’. … I took it back to London to record, which we did, and I said to Gordon, my manager, ‘this is a hit song’. We recorded it, and Gordon said to me a couple of weeks later, ‘you can’t have ‘Strangers in the Night’. I said, ‘why not?! It’s a hit song!’ He said, ‘Sinatra wants it’.”

That wasn’t the only exclusive story Engelbert had to share- host Tim asked Engelbert Humperdinck how “Lesbian Seagull” from the Beavis and Butthead movie came to be:

“I was playing the Greek Theatre, and the people who were gonna film this movie movie saw the show and come backstage after and said- ‘you seem to have a sense of humor!’… I said, why?! They said, ‘because we have a song for you, called ‘Lesbian Seagull’. I said, ‘Lesbian Seagull?!’ Well send it to me, I’ll have a listen.” They sent it to me, and I kind of liked it because it was so different and it promotes something I’ve never done before. And therefore I did it, and what happens? Platinum.”
