Janet Devlin Releases Latest Single ‘Daddy’, Preceding Upcoming Country-Rock Album ‘Emotional Rodeo’ Out October 25th
After reaching No. 4 on the iTunes Country Charts earlier this year, the incomparable Northern Irish songstress Janet Devlin is set to release her joyful new single ‘Daddy’ on August 23rd via OK!Good Records. The track follows-up previous 2024 singles, “Emotional Rodeo”and“Country Singer”.
Recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, the track delves into male societal expectations and gender role reversal within relationships, inspired by the concept of ‘sugar daddies’. Blending a traditional country-rock sound with her authentic, expressive vocal delivery, Devlin’s witty lyricism and fresh perspective convey yet another empowering message. This charismatic addition to her discography serves as a prelude to her upcoming album ‘Emotional Rodeo’, releasing October 25th.
“As a woman on the internet, not a day goes by without some rando in my DMs offering to be my “Sugar Daddy”. Which is fun, in and of itself. But it did get me thinking one day about how few “Sugar Baby” roles there are out there for men. How ‘Daddies’ are a dime a dozen but there’s a real shortage of trophy husbands. From playing this song on the road, I’ve come to find there are A LOT of men who would happily sign up for it. Men that are tired of being told to be the breadwinner. Tired of the societal expectations of being a “man”. Men that would happily be a house husband in exchange for play money and a man cave. As someone who lives a life outside of the social norms I love taking these things and flipping them on their head. I’m a firm believer in doing what makes you happy, not what the world tells you will make you happy.”
“I think that’s why the line “Not emasculate or dominate you” is important. I don’t think it takes away from one’s masculinity to be the one who isn’t the breadwinner. I don’t want to bring the vibe down since this is a playful song but I think men are tired. The expectation that a man should be the rock at all times is unattainable. That they must take on the financials of the family and be able to on their own. To be only an emotionless provider. It’s dangerous. We only have to look at the statistics to prove it.” – Janet Devlin
Born and raised in Gortin, County Tyrone, Devlin’s musical journey took off after she secured fifth place on The X Factor in 2011. Earning widespread acclaim, her debut album, ‘Running With Scissors’, reached #1 on the Indie Breakers Chart and entered the Top 50 of the Official UK Charts. Enchanting fans worldwide, her cover of The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m In Love’ has garnered nearly 20 million plays on Spotify alone. Devlin’s second album, ‘Confessional’ culminated in a headline UK tour in 2022 and the album hit the Billboard Top 100 in America. In addition to her live shows, Janet regularly performs a selection of covers and original songs online via Lounges.tv, connecting further with her global audience.
In 2023, amidst the whirlwind of touring alongside Russell Crowe and his band across Australia and Europe, Devlin traveled to the prestigious Blackbird Studio in Nashville to begin ‘Emotional Rodeo’. This was a real “pinch me” moment for the artist. She explains: “There were two main types of music I listened to as a youngster: country and rock. When those two worlds collide, I’m as giddy as a schoolgirl. Recording in Nashville was everything I thought it would be!” This brilliantly showcases her versatility as an artist, seamlessly transitioning from her folk-pop roots to the heartfelt narratives of country music. Janet Devlin has found a foothold in the music industry, standing out amongst the crowd with her soul-stirring vocal prowess and introspective lyricism. Originally formed by a fusion of tender folk, indie, and quirky pop, she has crafted a discography that profoundly resonates with listeners. With the courageous “Daddy”, the singer-songwriter continues to emerge as a distinct new voice in the country world, building anticipation for the honest, authentic “Emotional Rodeo”.
